Dolores Hidalgo is known for being the place where the Mexican War of Independence against Spain began. The Cry of Dolores 'Viva la Independencia' is a historical event that happened in Mexico in the early morning of 16 September 1810. Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church and gave pronunciamiento (call to arms) that triggered the Mexican War of Independence.
Dolores is also know for its wonderful Talavera ceramics that the local artisans have been making since the 18th century.
