Kauri Museum

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe has outstanding displays, real exhibits, original early photos and fascinating stories about the mighty Kauri Tree and its timber, gum and pioneering settlers. The museum provides insight into how the settlers harvested timber and gum from these giant trees and their uses.
The Otamatea Boarding House is a two storied life sized replica based on the boarding houses of the old Otamatea districts. They catered for the public who travelled on horseback or on the waterways of the Kaipara before the days of road or rail.
A real mill shows how logs were sawn into timber. A quality six room c.1900 home, fully furnished, original decor with dressed models is a fascinating insight.
